Beer and fermented mead are associated with the Viking period.

Beer is made from barley. During the Viiking period, water was considered unsafe to drink, so beer was consumed in large quantities. That is why both light and strong beer were produced. Children and adults drank light beer because it quenched their thirst after eating salty Viiking food.

The Vikings drink strong beer during festivals, along with a popular drink called mead. Mead is a sweet, fermented drink made from honey, water, and spices.

During the Viking Age, beer was believed to bring protection and healing. The inscription “alu” is found in the oldest runic inscriptions in Scandinavia, which means beer in Old Scandinavian.
